China: Day One

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

July 23, 2019

Today, is the first full day that I spent in China!

We had breakfast in the hotel at 8:00 a.m. Today, we went to the university that some of our hosts attend. It is called the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). The car ride to BFSU is about 30 to 40 minutes away from the hotel.

Students from left to right: Kamryn Calloway, Sydnee Johnson, Courtney Johnson, Reginae Butler, Stephanie Washington, and Kayla Grant.

BFSU has a beautiful campus! When we arrived into the classroom, they had our full names spelled in Chinese.

This is my full name in Chinese.

On our way to lunch, we took pictures on the campus and we were stopped by some of the locals to take pictures with them.

This is a picture of the Beijing Foreign Studies University crest. It is rumored that if a students steps on this crest, they will have bad luck and get bad grades.

After we ate lunch at the university, we went back to the classroom and had a two-hour lecture about United States and China relations. The professor's name who taught us is Mr. Tao XIE. His lecture was called The Middle Kingdom and the Beautiful Country Perceptions and Misperceptions.

The lecture was very thought provoking. Everyone in the classroom was very engaged and interested in how the Chinese viewed US and China relations.

After the lecture, we had some free time, so we split into two groups. One group (comprised mostly of boys) went to go play basketball. The other group (which was mostly girls and the one I went with) went to go get bubble tea.

Everything on the menu was in Chinese, so we had to get our tour guide to translate it for us.

After the bubble tea, we went back towards the University and had dinner. One thing that I noticed throughout the day is that when the Chinese people have guests they are very hospitable. They wanted to make sure that they served us and that we had everything that we needed. Another thing I noticed is that they do not let us order. They provide us with food, which is not a bad thing. The last thing I noticed is that their serving sizes are different than the serving sizes in the US. Sometimes, they have smaller portions of food than the US.

At dinner, we had three different types of meat (duck, beef and chicken) and a lot of vegetables. It does not taste like the Chinese food that is served in the United States. It is completely different than what I thought it would be.
